Our History
Instead, it began with a conversation among friends who saw the need for an independent, non-selective school of excellence in the Hills District.
This vision came to life in 1982 when, with the strong backing of the local community, The Hills Grammar School was established as a co-educational, independent institution free from religious affiliation.
Founded 1982
In an extraordinary display of support and commitment, 80 parents and supporters went guarantors to finance the establishment of the school, including the purchase of a 24-acre site in Kenthurst. The school officially opened its doors on Monday, 7 February 1983, welcoming 162 students from Kindergarten to Year 9.
Over 40 years later, Hills Grammar continues to thrive on its bushland campus, which now spans over 53 acres. The school is home to up to 1200 students from Kindergarten to Year 12, who benefit from an environment where learning is central and distractions are minimal. Since 2010, the campus has also included a 79-place long day care centre for preschoolers.
We wanted a student population that was truly international... thereby ensuring a great cross-fertilisation of ideas, ideals, with students learning from each other, on the basic human level, they are all the same. It was considered ethically indefensible to discriminate between students on the basis of gender, race, religion or country of birth... Establishing The Hills Grammar School was the result of a cooperative effort of many people sharing fundamental notions of ethics and justice.
